The University of Chittagong is a public research university in Bangladesh. It was founded on 18 November 1966. The campus is located in Fatehpur, Hathazari Upazila. It covers 2,312 acres of hilly land. The site is around 22 kilometers north of Chittagong city.
The idea began in 1961. The Chittagong University Movement Council guided the effort. Badshah Mia Chowdhury and Professor Ahmad Hossain were key leaders.
The university runs programs in many subjects. These include both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. It works under several faculties. The university supports teaching and research in all departments.

The University of Chittagong started academic activities on 28 November 1966. The first classes were held for the MA (Preliminary) program in Bangla, English, History, and Economics. These were under the Faculty of Arts. It began with only 200 students. Later, Medical, Engineering, Law, and Education colleges joined as separate faculties. The university expanded its programs step by step. The campus is located in Fatehpur under Hathazari Upazila, 22 km north of Chittagong city. It covers over 2,312 acres of hilly land. Different departments were introduced in phases. The Faculty of Arts began with Bangla, English, and History. Later it added Fine Arts, Philosophy, Islamic History, Oriental Languages, Arabic and Persian Languages, and Journalism. The Science Faculty started with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Later, it added Statistics, Zoology, Botany, Oceanography, Forestry, and a Research Centre in Physics and Mathematics. The center was opened by Nobel Laureate Professor Abdus Salam in 1989. The Faculty of Social Science started in 1971. It now includes Economics, Political Science, Sociology, Public Administration, and Anthropology. The Commerce Faculty began in 1971. The Faculty of Law started in 1992. Each department offers honors and master's level programs. The university continues to grow in size and diversity.
