The institute came out of the Engineering College, Chittagong and it was established in the year 1968.
Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology shares a rich legacy in the academic field. By means of the Government ordinance in 1986, the college was transformed into a technological institute. In the year 2003, the university took the shape of a public institute. The Chancellor of the university is none other than the President of Bangladesh. He is the person to look into things and enhance the prestige of the institution.

The courses offered under the head are Civil Engineering, Disaster Engineering and Management and Water Resources Engineering.
The Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology CUET is also known for offering Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering. The courses offered under the head are Mechanical Engineering, Petroleum and Mining Engineering, Mechatronics and Industrial Engineering and Materials and Metallurgical Engineering.
In the third place CUET is known for introducing the stream of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the courses offered are Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering and at the end Biomedical Engineering.
